Genre Research
FOr this project my plan was to make an ad poster and on it it would have a link to a website that i would outline, but the main thing would be the poster. Most posters fall in one of two catagories. The first is the type of poster that is supposed to be informative. These usually have alot of information on them that answer the basic questions who, what, when, where, and why. They usually have the event in large print in bold letters that catch the viewers eye, then give them the rest of the info that they need. These posters usually have a specific target audience that know exactly what they want, just need to know when and where to find it, like event ads. The other type of poster generally found is one to pique curiosity. These usually have a captivating image or phrase that draws the viewer in. but the poster leaves the viewer wanting more, giving them a place where they can go to find the information they can seek. these are usually new product ads or ads trying to raise awareness for a cause. these have no specific audience, but more try to inform whoever might be interested in the product or cause. they usually try to persuade the viewer of something, whether it be that their product is better than the competitors, or to evoke some emotion in a person for a cause. they try to create fealings by the image or phrase, not by the direct info. this typw is much harder to achieve since the designer has to create an emotion without any explanation of their picture or phrase. this is the type of poster that i wish to try. i want to capture a viewers attention and make them want to know more just based of an image or phrase. this was briefly covered in an art class that i took senior year. and it is also apparent from the infinite amount of ads that we see everyday.

innitiating action plan
My audience is anyone who is legitimately interested in trying hookah and more particularly attending She-Sha. My purpose is to catch the eye of potential patrons and get them to interested in She-Sha and then give them a place where they can find some more information on smoking hookah in general and She-Sha in particularly. As a business, it is important that She-Sha keep customers coming in. Since it is located in a college town, its patrons are constantly graduating and leaving, so they need a way to attract the students coming into the college. As far as a genre, I hope to create a flyer or poster that will attract the attention of the viewer almost immediately, get them intrigued, and then send them to a website where they can find information on She-Sha and hookah in general.

Initiating Action Homework Asignment
I love to look at ads for different things, especially posters and flyers. being able to catch a passer-by's eye in one quick glance is an art form. The artist has to be able to present an image that captivates the viewers attention in a fraction of a second, but also locate enough information on the ad that the viewer can then figure out what it's about, but without bugging up the captivating image. I have made several attempts at this in an art class i took in high school, and i must say, it is much more difficult than the artist makes it look. I hope to try and do a poster or flyer of this type that would then have a fake url on it and then to make a mock website to go in my prtfolio, but we shall see how that goes.

not having a good semester english-wise
yeah, so i was a dumbass and forgot to email my draft to kayvan to have him comment on it (sorry again kayvan). it seams that lately i have really been dropping the ball when it comes to english. i am an engineering major so all of my major engineering-related classes have me overwhelmed and it seems like english is taking the back-burner, which is not ok. i need to pull my head out of my ass and start focusing on this class before i fail it and have to take another 2 semesters worth of english.

Essay Responses Part Dos
I agree with what Encountering the Essay said about how the typical 5-paragraph essay really is not an essay, but more just a good way to gt a point across. To me an essay is more like a reflective or emotive piece of writing that may or may not even try to make a point. Usually they do need a point though, or they are considedred a narrative. I agree with the writer of Encountering the Essay on about everything he says. I liked what the author of Essayists on the Essay said in one of the first few paragraphs that he thought the ideal essa was one where he felt like he was comuning with the writer of the essay. i know that I personally always enjoy an essay exponentially more (sorry, im an engineer) if i feel like the writer is talking to me. It makes the essay much more personal and I actually feel like reading it.

essay responses
I think that these three essays were very interesting. i particualry like the test pilot and Ali in Havana. I liked how the author of The Test Pilot campared the air shows of the pilot to different artists. He constantly talked of how the shows were works of art. I also liked how he showed how this art was difernet from normal art in that the artist can never see his own work, even though it is considered by many a masterpiece. For some odd reason I found that interesting. I liked the quirkiness of Ali in Havana. i liked all of the odd little things that the narrartor describes Ali doing while in the presence of a political giant. Silent Dancing, or at least i think it was Silent Dancing (I had no page numbers to go off of) i found differnent from the other two essays. the other two recounted an event or series of events, while Silent Dancing was more of a commentary on a piece of literature applied to an event in the authors past.

Course Goals
My goals for Honors English (aside from getting an A) is more than the normal improving my grammar and spelling. These are some major areas that I wish to improve, but I see that more as a result of the class, not necessarily a goal. My two major goals for this course are becoming better at communicating and conveying what I am thinking to others and to become better at expressing myself through writing. These are both very important skills for me to have if I am to become a mechanical engineer as I plan.
Possessing the ability to convey your thoughts and ideas in an understandable manner is critical in engineering. If no one knows what it is you are trying to say, how are they going to manufacture the part you have designed, how are they going to understand your idea on a project solution, or how are they going to ever be able to do anything without understanding your intentions? If you cannot convey your ideas to others, then your ideas are lost, and therefore useless. In this class we will be doing a lot of writing where you are trying to get your reader to see things from your perspective. Although it is not exactly like trying to get a build team to understand your design for a machine, the basic principle is the same, making others see things the way you see them.
I have always had a slight artistic side. I enjoy expressing myself through various forms of visual art, mostly sketching and sculpture. Writing is another form of self expression. For class we are required to write blogs. That is the ultimate medium for self expression through writing. In a blog you can just post whatever it is you feel without worrying about it being critiqued and graded based on content. The other project in class that I can express myself, or at least my views on an issue is our communities assignment. This is going to prove to be a bit more of a challenge, since I cannot just blatantly say what I think, but have to infer it from the things I write. This should be good practice at letting my views on a topic show through my writing.
